Sweeney Out At WZLX

*The turnover in Boston morning show continues - and this time it's at eastern MASSACHUSETTS' classic rock station, where morning host Steve Sweeney disappeared from "Steve Sweeney's neighborhood" a couple of weeks ago for what was initially billed as a vacation.

Now it turns out that Sweeney's not coming back, and in the great circle that is radio, his shift is being filled (for the moment, at least) by Bill Abbate (whose own WBOS morning show was axed a few months back) and fellow WBOS veteran Hutch.

Out in western Massachusetts, "Omelette" has vanished from the morning-show menu at WLZX (99.3 Northampton), where Leslie Hall is doing the show solo for now, while the station looks for a replacement.

Back in the Boston market, Entercom is bringing Steve Jones down from Canada to handle PD chores at its adult hits "Mike" WMKK (93.7 Lawrence). Jones was VP/programming for the NewCap group of stations up there; at "Mike," he replaces Jerry McKenna, recently departed for Infinity's WBMX.

And we're sorry to report the death of Norm Prescott, who entertained Boston listeners as a DJ on WORL, WHDH and WBZ in the late forties and fifties. During his time in Boston, Prescott founded the Norm Prescott School of Broadcasting, later known as the Northeast Broadcasting School (and now the Brookline-based New England Institute of Art.)

By the early sixties, Prescott had relocated to the west coast (though he'd be reminded of his WBZ connections during the payola investigations of 1960, when he became the first Boston DJ to admit accepting bribes to play records), and it was out there that he began a new career in animated TV as a co-founder of Filmation, which produced everything from The Archies to Fat Albert to the animated version of Star Trek before folding in 1988.

Prescott died July 2 in Los Angeles. He was 78.

*NEW HAMPSHIRE Public Radio has chosen a new leader to succeed Mark Handley when he steps down as the network's president in September. Elizabeth "Betsy" Gardella will come to NHPR from American Public Media in Minnesota. Before that, she served as executive VP and COO at New York's WNYC, guiding the station through its rebuilding efforts after its FM transmitter was destroyed in the 9/11 attacks.

*In Erie, PENNSYLVANIA, Gannon University's WERG has completed its move from 89.9 to 90.5, taking the station from 3000 watts at 124 feet below average terrain (on the Gannon campus near downtown Erie) to 2750 watts at 374 feet above average terrain, on a new antenna mounted on the WQLN-TV tower south of Erie.

Down the road in Greenville, new owner Harold Glunt has taken control of WEXC (107.1), flipping the station from oldies to Christian rock as "Freq 107." Sister station WGRP (940) is reportedly silent - and the "Wexy" oldies have reappeared on the dial at WLOA (1470 Farrell PA), which Glunt's Beacon Broadcasting is buying from Buffalo-based Holy Family Communications for $295,000, putting an end to the Catholic programming that had been airing there.

While we're across the state line in Ohio (and tromping on the turf of our new colleagues at Ohio Media Watch), we note that the long-running construction permit for WYBL (98.3 Ashtabula) has finally begun testing. No word yet on what the permanent format will be for this new Clear Channel station, which should have at least some reach to the west side of the Erie market.

Over at the other end of the Keystone State, Radio One's WRNB (107.9 Pennsauken, NEW JERSEY) posted some amazing numbers in the most recent ratings - and now it's improving its signal a bit, too, moving from the Alford master antenna on the One Liberty skyscraper in downtown Philadelphia to a new two-bay antenna at the very top of the building's mast.

*The call changes in NEW YORK's Southern Tier have now been followed by some format flips at the Route 81 Radio cluster in Elmira-Corning: the oldies that had been on "Gem 97.7" follow the WGMM calls to what had been WCBA-FM (98.7 Corning), with "Gem 98.7" also being heard on WCBA (1350 Corning). WENY-FM (92.7 Elmira) is now simulcasting with what's now WCBA-FM (97.7 Big Flats), and they're doing AC as "Magic." And on the AM side, WCLI (1450 Corning) changes calls to WENI, to match its talk simulcast with WENY (1230 Elmira). The stations have now moved into their new storefront studios on Corning's Market Street, and we'll have to get down there to check it out one of these days.

In New York City, former WABC talker Steve Malzberg is gone from mornings at WWRL (1600), where Karen Hunter is now handling the shift solo.

*Just a few notes from CANADA: CJEZ (EZ Rock 97.3) in Toronto has named a new morning show. The station will bring Stu Jeffries and Colleen Rusholme over from CING (Country 95.3) in Burlington. (Milkman UnLimited reports that former EZ Rock morning host Christine Cardoso, who's been out on maternity leave, won't be returning to the station.)

In Arnprior, Ontario, CHMY (96.1 Renfrew) applies for a 50-watt relay transmitter on 104.7. And in Yarmouth, N.S., Radio-Canada applies for a new outlet for its "Espace Musique" service, which would operate on 106.1 with 54 kW/171.6 m and a directional antenna.

*Our special clearance pricing continues for fans of the Tower Site Calendar 2005. We're well aware that many of the calendar's fans buy it for the pictures, not the actual calendar pages...but that doesn't change the fact that by this time of the year, we're not exactly shipping 'em out the door at a breakneck pace, and Mrs. NERW would very much like a corner of her living room back.

So while she rediscovers the floor beneath those boxes of calendars and we begin to line up the images for Tower Site Calendar 2006, you get the very first crack at our Calendar Clearance Deal for 2005.

Here's how it works: instead of our list price of $16 for this fabulous, full-color, glossy calendar, you can now pick one up for just $8, postpaid. ($8.64 to New York State addresses.) Better yet, if you order two calendars at this special clearance price, we'll throw in a third for free - $16 for THREE calendars, with nine exciting months of 2005 yet to go. (That's $17.28 in NYS.)

Maybe you've already hung your original 2005 calendar on the wall, and you're thinking it would be nice to have another copy to stick away in pristine condition. Maybe you really want to frame that spectacular September page right now - but you still need a calendar later this year. Maybe you just want to help Mrs. NERW clean out the living room and give happy NERW baby Ariel more space to practice walking.

Whatever your motive, now's your big chance, because while there are still 2005 calendars left, there may not be any in a few weeks. (Remember, the 2002 and 2003 editions were total sellouts, and I've had to turn away several of you who were hoping to add these now-rare calendars to your collections.)

And we've got two more great deals for you, too. We still have a few 2004 calendars left, and while they're getting rare, Mrs. NERW wants them gone - so they're yours, in pristine condition, for just $5 postpaid. (Buy two and the third is free!) Or order the 2004 and 2005 calendars together for just $10, postpaid. (What a deal!)

(New York orders pay $5.40 for the 2004 calendar, $10.80 for the 2004 and 2005 together.)

And as always, the calendar's free with your $60 or higher subscription to NorthEast Radio Watch/fybush.com. In fact, as part of our Early Summer Subscription Drive, you can be among the first to reserve your free 2006 Tower Site Calendar with your $60 subscription - and we'll even send you a 2005 as well, if you ask. Remember, we count on your subscription dollars to keep NERW coming each and every Monday morning!

You can use PayPal, below, or send your check or money order, payable to Scott Fybush, to 92 Bonnie Brae Avenue, Rochester NY 14618. (Please note that the prices below are valid for U.S. and Canadian orders only; please e-mail for information about overseas shipping.)

Order the 2005 Tower Site Calendar on CLEARANCE for $8...
Order the 2005 and 2004 Tower Site Calendars together for just $10...
...or subscribe to NERW at the $60 level and get two FREE 2005 Tower Site Calendars
...and you can still order the 2004 Tower Site Calendar at our special DEEP clearance price of $5! (US and Canada only - e-mail us for overseas ordering information.)

Don't want to order by credit card? You know the drill by now - make those checks payable to "Scott Fybush," be sure to include sales tax (8.%) for New York state calendar orders only, and send them along to 92 Bonnie Brae Avenue, Rochester NY 14618. (Sorry - we can't take orders by phone.)

Thanks for your support!
