In this week’s issue… WTDY becomes “US 96.5” – Ball club buys Forever’s York signals – WNYC CEO out, again – Hall of Fame inductions honor region’s broadcasters – More country in Buffalo

(We’re once again catching up from travel, in this case the NAB New York show, so it’s another double issue. The plan is to get back to weekly publication in November… stay tuned!)
*There’s no question that country music is having a moment right now (just ask Ella and Stella), but it still came as a surprise last Monday when Audacy sprung a new country station on PENNSYLVANIA‘s biggest market.
WTDY (96.5 Philadelphia) had most recently been doing hot AC as “The New 96.5,” the latest iteration in more than a decade of shuffles back and forth from AC to hot AC to top-40 as Audacy tried to position the station alongside its AC behemoth WBEB (B101) and classic hits WOGL (Big 98.1).
With its flip to country as “US 96.5” under new calls WCUS, the station now goes up instead against the market’s legacy country signal, Beasley’s WXTU (92.5), which has had the format to itself for decades.
After an initial jockless launch, WCUS will add most of Audacy’s national country lineup this week, including Katie & Company in middays, Rob & Holly at night and Mo & StyckMan overnight. Coop, who’s also hosting mornings on WOGL, will handle afternoons. No morning show has been announced yet for the station.
Looking to get into station ownership? Our StationSale division has some great new listings for you, including a major market FM translator opportunity, a profitable Midwest FM, an inexpensive entry into a fast-growing Western market, and a turnkey profitable FM/AM/translator small-market combo that’s ready for a new owner. Drop me a line at scott@fybush.com and I’ll set you up with an NDA and all the details…
And if your noncommercial FM station is ready to think about translators, there’s a filing window coming soon from the FCC and it’s the perfect time to start making plans.
